Labrador Puppies: Learn More About this Sought-After Breed

Labrador retrievers are some of the most sought-after dog breeds around the world. Labrador puppies are notoriously cute and playful growing into loyal, intelligent adult dogs who are eager to please their owner. Labrador retrievers are typically classified into 3 colors which are chocolate, black, and cream colored. However, their coats can be found in a wide range of colors.

Labrador puppies make the ideal companion and family dogs with their mild temperament. They’re great with kids and have a hard-working character, making them easy to train. Labrador puppies are popular companions and make great service dogs, too. They are often trained as emotional support dogs, rescue dogs, and even drug-sniffing dogs. Here’s what you need to know about Labrador puppies and one of the world’s favorite dog breeds.

Roots in Newfoundland

Labrador puppies have their ancestral roots in Newfoundland, a Canadian fishing province where fishermen historically used working dogs. Back in the 1700’s a resident began breeding Newfoundlands with local water dogs which eventually led to the Labrador puppies we all know and love today. At the time, local fishermen were breeding working dogs with a dense water-resistant coat which allowed them to retrieve items from the icy cold water.

By the early 1800s, English aristocrats in the United Kingdom had heard of these hard-working dogs that made great companions and had them imported. By the late 1800s, the Earl of Malmesbury had these specific dogs imported to his breeding kennel. Many experts and critics alike consider this time to be the true origin of the Labrador puppies we have today.

Labrador Puppies’ Popularity Spreads

By the early 1900s, America had also heard of this intelligent dog with a mild temperament and decided to have them imported as well. This is also the time the St. John’s water dog officially became extinct. As Labrador puppies rose to popularity throughout America, England, and Canada, the Kennel Club began officially recognizing the dogs as a breed. By 1917, the American Kennel Club also recognized Labrador puppies as an official breed.

By the turn of the 21st century, Labrador puppies were among the most popular and sought-after dogs worldwide and they still hold that title today. Labrador retrievers have held the number 1 spot consistently for over 30 years. While their ancestors may have been lost to extinction, Labrador puppies aren’t going anywhere any time soon.

Labrador Puppies

Labrador puppies come in different colors and distinctions. While there are some subtle differences between the American and English Labradors, they both have the same ancestors. The English Labrador puppies are a bit thicker with shorter legs, but they are equally as intelligent and hard-working as the American Labrador puppies. American Labradors tend to be a bit more energetic than their English counterparts, but both make incredible working dogs and companions.
